Originally used as farmland by the Weckquaeskeck Native Americans, the area around White Plains first settled by Connecticut Puritans in 1683. The area was called “the White Plains” due to its frequent blankets of early morning mist. White Plains, as part of the larger Town of Rye, became the Westchester County seat in 1758; White Plains itself was established as the incorporated Town of White Plains in 1788. White Plains holds historical significance as a battlefield during the American Revolutionary War. Throughout the 1900s, White Plains evolved into a popular suburban shopping and residential area; today, many major corporations are based out of White Plains, rather than nearby New York City, including Nine West, Heineken, Dannon, and ITT.
